In an interview with dzMM, Mindanao Peace Advocate and Director of the Institute for Autonomy and Governance Fr. Eliseo “Jun” Mercado said the house arrest is “out of respect not for the person, but for the position she held for more than 9 years.”
This is from the French concept called “noblesse oblige” or literally, nobility obliges.
While it is true that Arroyo needs to face justice, she should not be treated like a “common criminal,” he said.
Mercado said he is a close friend of Arroyo, but they parted ways when he joined the late former President Corazon Aquino in calling for her stepping down from office during the NBN-ZTE scandal.
He lambasted the “mob-lynching” of the ex-leader.
In a separate statement, he said, “I am truly saddened that people are being goaded to leer for mob lynching of PGMA even in times of sickness and definitely I see this as wanting in magnanimity of spirit. I have observed this with trepidation and I have asked myself where all these cruelties are coming from...”
He noted Arroyo’s administration was characterized by scams and impeachment attempts, but “that to resolve all these controversies we should be guided by our high ethical standard and rule of law not by any tinge of vindictiveness and definitely not by mob lynching albeit it seems popular.”
In his radio interview, he said the Commission on Elections (Comelec) should have first filed cases against the perpetrators of the electoral sabotage.
He said Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes should first “clean his own house.”
