Artists poised for Final showdown

"The shadow of Johan Cruyff will loom large over the 19th FIFA World Cup™ Final on Sunday. The 11 men chosen to represent the Netherlands will take to the pitch as heirs of the team synonymous with 'Total Football', aiming to achieve what Cruyff and Co never quite managed. On the opposing side, seven of Spain's probable line-up play their domestic football with Catalan giants Barcelona, the club where the legendary Dutchman cemented his reputation as player and coach.

Not since 1978, when Argentina faced the Netherlands, have two nations competed for a maiden world title. The Oranje are yet to put a foot wrong in their quest, winning all eight of their qualifying matches and boasting an impressive record of six victories out of six in South Africa. A successful outcome in the third Final of their history would see them join the mighty 1970 Brazil side as the only other team to have won all of their games on the way to claiming the world title.

As reigning European champions, La Roja will look to their golden generation of superstars to ensure that the country's name is finally engraved on the coveted Trophy. Germany remain the only team to have lifted the FIFA World Cup two years after winning the UEFA European Championship, but a Spanish victory would expand this elite club's membership to two."

Swiss solar plane makes history with 26 hr flight

"PAYERNE, Switzerland (AFP) - – A solar powered aircraft made history Thursday after flying around the clock on the sun's energy alone, bringing the dream of perpetual flight a step closer.

After 26 hours in the air, the experimental Solar Impulse aircraft, flown by Andre Borschberg, made a seamless landing at Payerne airbase in western Switzerland at 9.01 am (0701 GMT), about three hours after daybreak.

'It's the first time ever that a solar airplane has flown through the night,' said Bertrand Piccard, the Swiss adventurer who masterminded the project.

A euphoric Borschberg alighted from the single-seater plane to congratulations and slaps on the back from the 70-strong support team.

'I have the impression that I'm still in the air,' the 57-year-old said.

'I feel very pleased, really happy. It was a crucial step. Now we'll go even further, we'll do long missions,' he added. Related article: Solar plane packed with technology

The aircraft had taken off from Payerne at 0451 GMT Wednesday, for 14 hours of sunshine to power its engines and charge its batteries for the night flight.

Its wings -- a 63-metres (207-feet) span that matches the Airbus A340 airliner -- are covered with an array of 12,000 solar cells."

Kevin Bacon In Talks For ‘X-Men: First Class’ Villain?

"After a week of casting rumors and changes, an even bigger coup may give 'X-Men: First Class' its main villain.

According to Deadline, Kevin Bacon is in talks to play the villain in 'X-Men: First Class.' Bacon has previously appeared in numerous films, including 'Animal House,' 'Footloose,' 'Flatliners,' 'A Few Good Men,' 'Apollo 13' and 'Mystic River.' Bacon's long list of credits also led to the popular 'Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon' game.

It's interesting to note that the report doesn't cite which villain Bacon would play in the film. In the original comics, Professor Xavier and Magneto went up against the Nazi war criminal Baron Strucker early in their careers, while Xavier also had encounters with Lucifer, who was eventually revealed as an alien invader. Neither of these characters seem like obvious choices for the villain in this film, though.

It's also conceivable that 'First Class' could retrofit an existing villain for the film or possibly create a new one altogether.

If Bacon is signed to the role, he would join James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Alice Eve as confirmed cast members.

Benjamin Walker was previously set to play the Beast, but is rumored to have been replaced by Nicholas Hoult."

China court accepts 'Avatar' plagiarism case

BEIJING – A Beijing court will hear a case filed against "Avatar" director James Cameron by a Chinese man who claims the idea for the sci-fi film came from a novel he published, state media said Saturday.
After throwing out the case in March due to insufficient evidence, the court agreed to the hearing after Zhou Shaomou dropped a demand for as much as 147 million dollars in compensation, the China Daily said, citing the author.
"Avatar", the top-grossing movie of all time, has raked in some 2.7 billion dollars worldwide since its release.
"I was told to go to the court next Monday to provide more material," Zhou said, without providing details of the new evidence.
Zhou has reserved the right to seek compensation before the Beijing Number One Intermediate Court rules on the case, the state-run newspaper said.
A court official told the China Daily that it could take six months before the case is heard.
"Due to the fact that some accused parties are foreigners or foreign companies it takes time to send the indictment through diplomatic channels," the official Lu Yao said.
Besides Cameron, Zhou is also suing 20th Century Fox Film Corporation, two Chinese movie distributors and Haidian Theatre where he watched the film.
Zhou said the plot of "Avatar" -- the story of a paraplegic former US Marine who is sent to live with a race of blue aliens on the Earth-like moon Pandora -- closely resembled that of a novel he wrote in 1997.
The novel, "The Legend of the Blue Crow", was published on two Chinese websites in segments in 1999, previous state media reports have said.
However, the official website for the film says Cameron first developed the idea 15 years ago -- a few years before Zhou's novel was completed.
"Avatar" has been wildly popular in China, quickly becoming the highest-grossing film in the country's history after its January 4 release in both 2D and 3D versions.

Nokia-Pilipinas bags SEABA U-18 crown | ABS-CBN News | Latest Philippine Headlines, Breaking News, Video, Analysis, Features: "YANGOON, Myanmar – Nokia-Pilipinas proved too strong for Thailand, fashioning out a 69-38 win to clinch the SEABA Under-18 Championship for men via a five-game sweep Friday at the Thuwonna National Stadium here.

The Filipino boys had a lethargic start not seen in their first four games, but got their acts going in the second quarter on the way to wrapping up the win just the same -- with plenty to spare.

“Mission accomplished,” uttered coach Eric Altamirano moments after the victory which gave the Filipino boys a ticket to the FIBA- Asia Under-18 for men in Yemen this September. “We’re very happy we won the championship. The boys were very consistent the whole tournament, although somehow nahirapan ng konti sa game because Thailand was really into it until the fourth period.”

Six-foot-6 Jethroy Rosario was simply unstoppable inside while Keifer Ravena frolicked from outside as the duo provided the needed sparks for the team which has now duplicated a feat achieved by Franz Pumaren’s team that also swept the SEABA title in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2007.

If there was any consolation, Thailand at least emerged as the only team that showed some semblance of fight."

10-brands-that-may-disappear-in-2011: Personal Finance News from Yahoo! Finance

24/7 Wall St. regularly compiles a report of brands that are likely to disappear in the near-term. Last April, and again in December, we published our findings. Usually, it would take a full year before such a list could be compiled again. However, the current economic climate has accelerated this process and a majority of the brands on the first two lists are either gone, have been acquired, or have filed for bankruptcy.
With a number of the brands on the December list either gone or on a short-term path to extinction, 24/7 Wall St. has put together the latest version of the Ten Brands That Will Disappear. To qualify, we expect that brand to be gone by the end of 2011, or for its parent to be sold or go into Chapter 11.

Weekend total solar eclipse visible to lucky few - World - GMANews.TV - Official Website of GMA News and Public Affairs - Latest Philippine News
LOS ANGELES – A total eclipse of the sun occurs Sunday, but don't be so quick to take out your special viewing glasses.

Unlike recent solar eclipses, this year's complete blotting out of the sun will be visible only in a narrow slice of the Southern Hemisphere.

The spectacle begins at sunrise some 1,200 miles northeast of New Zealand. The moon's shadow will sweep across the South Pacific, darkening skies over the Cook Islands, Easter Island and parts of southern Chile and Argentina.

The time of greatest eclipse will occur over open water, lasting 5 minutes and 20 seconds.

Williams College astronomer Jay Pasachoff recently traveled to remote Easter Island with a small group of students to observe what would be his 51st eclipse. They planned to set up telescopes to image the sun's glowing corona — the usually invisible outer atmosphere of the sun — which appears as a pearly white crown during an eclipse.

"I am sad that so few people will be able to view this year's eclipse since it doesn't pass over major cities," Pasachoff said in an e-mail.

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and Earth. The moon blocks the light from the sun and casts a shadow on Earth.

Last year's total solar eclipse — the longest one of the 21st century — fell over a wide swath of Asia, but clouds and drizzle in some places prevented some revelers from getting the full experience.

"The key thing is to have good weather," Pasachoff said.

Some eclipse chasers who can't view the exotic sun show at home joined tours. Fifty people left on the Fourth of July for a nine-day trip to the South Pacific. The tour was led by the Planetary Society, a space advocacy group.

Tourists island-hopped around Tahiti, the French Polynesian island of Moorea and will head to the Anaa atoll, where they will wake up early to view the eclipse expected to last three minutes. The price? $4,995 a person, not including airfare.

Scientists recommend that people wear special viewing glasses during a total solar eclipse and avoid looking directly with the naked eye.

The next total solar eclipse will occur in November 2012 and will be visible from northern Australia and the South Pacific. —AP

Facebook in deal to sell site credits in Asia - Technology - GMANews.TV - Official Website of GMA News and Public Affairs - Latest Philippine News

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Facebook is partnering with a Malaysian company to sell credits at retail outlets across Asia for the first time, aiming to make it easier for millions of people to purchase virtual goods and play games on the social networking site while boosting revenue for developers.

Electronic payments company MOL — part of the business empire of tycoon Vincent Tan — will offer the online currency from Aug. 1 at more than 500,000 outlets including 7-Eleven stores and Internet cafes in five Southeast Asian countries, India, Australia and New Zealand, company spokesman Nor Badron said Friday.

The move is targeting people who don't have a credit card, particularly younger Facebook users, and those who don't want to take the risk of making payments online.

"Asia has a huge gaming community, and it's typically young people," Nor said. "The penetration for credit cards is very low... so the developers are not making money and missing this opportunity."

Nor said MOL already sells prepaid credits for other online games at its established network of stores, but it will be the first time that consumers can buy credits for Facebook's applications, including such popular games as Mob Wars and FarmVille, without credit cards.

MOL, which last year bought social networking site Friendster, announced the partnership with Facebook in a press release Thursday.

"We view this agreement as a major opportunity to broaden the availability of a simple, unified currency that can be used in games and applications across Facebook," said Vaughan Smith, director of business and corporate development at Facebook, in the press release.

"Working with MOL means we can offer the benefits of Facebook Credits to millions of people in Asia using a payment system that is already widely used and trusted," he said.

In Southeast Asia, the credits will be sold in Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines.

More than 70 percent of Facebook members use applications, and payment transactions and volume have seen a double-digit increase over the last quarters, according to MOL.— AP

Usher wants another "Thrilla in Manila"

Is he the next MJ?

By Charley Bautista-Braga, Yahoo! Southeast Asia
Fresh from hit concerts in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Seoul, Korea, the multi-awarded singer, composer, and producer is ready to take on Manila for the first time. 31-year-old Usher Raymond IV (known simply as “Usher”) chatted with the media on his thoughts about the Philippines, his music, and what to expect in his concert.
“Mabuhay!” Usher exclaimed when he arrived at the media gathering. “To be lei-ed here is incredible,” he joked, referring to the string of flowers around his neck (of course). He talked about plane delays and posed for photos, and eventually settled down to discuss what Pinoy fans want to hear about the multi-talented singer, composer, and producer.
On Filipino culture
“I hope to learn more about Filipino culture while I’m here,” Usher admitted. “I know about Manny Pacquiao and how he beats people up. But the last time I heard of a major event here was the ‘Thrilla in Manila’ and I hope that tomorrow’s event will be something like that, with my music.”

HTC Smart Review

For more than a week, I’ve been testing HTC’s new entry-level smartphone, the HTC Smart. Here are my impressions of the said smartphone.
HTC Smart

Design

Despite being a low-priced smartphone, the HTC Smart features an attractive and elegant design. The body is made of solid plastic with aluminium-like finish on the front and a softer, glossy plastic back cover.
The smartphone features a 2.8-inch TFT-LCD touch screen with QVGA (320×240) resolution. Below the display are the Menu, Call, Back/Home and End Call/Power buttons. On top of the display screen beside the earpiece is a Notification LED which functions when you miss a call, when charging or when the phone battery is running low.
Located on the top of the smartphone is a 3.5mm headset jack. On the left side is the Volume control and on the right side is the Capture button (for taking photos/videos). An 11-pin mini-USB 2.0 connector can be found at the bottom.
The AC charger is a clip-on and can also be used as a USB charger and data cable. The headset is nothing out of the ordinary.
At 108 grams, the phone is light and it fits well and feels comfortable in the hand.
HTC Smart

Interface and Performance

The HTC Smart is powered by a 300 MHz processor running on Brew Mobile Platform OS with HTC Sense.
The display screen is resistive and therefore less responsive than other HTC smartphones with capacitive touch screens such as the HTC Legend. There is no multi-touch support.
The HTC Sense introduces a total of seven home screens: Weather, Photo, Music, Contacts, FriendStream, Messages and the Main home screen. These provide quick access to your information and media.
The Main home screen can accommodate up to nine application shortcuts. By default, it displays the clock and three shortcuts. You can slide your finger upwards to view all the nine shortcuts.
The home screen is customizable and you can select preset layouts called Scenes or change the Home or Lock Screen wallpapers. Sliding your finger from the top of the screen displays the Scene selection and the Notifications.
You can easily navigate thru the different screens by sliding your finger horizontally or vertically across the screen.
To remove a shortcut, simply press and hold then drag and release the shortcut.
Pressing the Back/Home button will bring you back to the Main home screen.  Pressing it while at the Main home screen will show all applications/programs.
It took some time for me to get used to the controls and navigation of this smartphone.

Calling

You can add up to nine commonly used numbers or contacts on the Contact/People screen for easy access. There is a Smart Dial that automatically filters contacts by name or number while dialling. Call quality is decent but I experienced some difficulty with the loud speakers since they are located at the back of the phone.

Messaging

The messaging client allows you to send an SMS, MMS or Email and to attach photos, videos, audio and contacts easily.  Messages are displayed on a thread so it is easy to backtrack conversations.
Changing the orientation of the phone automatically switches Phone keypad (portrait) to QWERTY keypad (landscape).  Using the virtual keypad requires some familiarization and practice.
HTC Smart

Internet and other connectivity

The HTC Smart doesn’t have a Wi-Fi and uses 3G/GSM/GPRS/EDGE to connect to the Internet. The browser can be switched to landscape or portrait orientation. You can zoom in/out by double tapping the display.
The phone has Bluetooth 2.0 and can also be connected to the PC via the mini-USB connector.
It has an Airplane mode option which allows you to disable all wireless connections when travelling.

E-mail

The smartphone allows you to set your Gmail, AOL and other email accounts as a default in the Email application. Just like the browser, the Email app is pretty straightforward.

FriendStream

One of the main features of the HTC Smart is the FriendStream.  The Friendstream aggregates updates from your Facebook and Twitter contacts. It also allows you to view and update your status and share links and photos easily.

Media

Camera
The HTC Smart uses a 3.0 megapixel camera with a flashlight but without an autofocus. The camera has a minimum resolution of 320×240 and a maximum resolution of 2048×1536. You can set the camera’s brightness and contrast and choose from different filters like Grayscale, Sepia and Negative. There are no dedicated controls for zooming in/out and you can zoom via the Menu. You cannot zoom the camera while taking videos. The smartphone allows you to share photos directly by Mail, Messaging, Facebook and Bluetooth.
Video
The video almost shares the same features as the camera. You cannot share videos directly in Facebook though.
FM Radio
The radio lets you to listen to your favourite FM Radio stations. It displays six radio stations for quick access and also allows you to add stations to presets. You can listen to Mono or Stereo mode and also enable the speakers. The headset works as an antenna and you need to connect the headset to use this feature.
Music
The HTC Smart has a built in music player that allows you to load and listen to your favourite music by Artist or by Album. You can also create a playlist or load all available songs and even share music via Bluetooth.
The sound quality is impressive with the headset on. The speaker is also loud but sound quality is not superior.
HTC Smart

Others

Battery Life
Battery life proves to be a plus for HTC Smart. I can use the phone for 3 or 4 days in just one charging.

Storage
The HTC Smart has 256 MB ROM and 256 MB RAM. It supports memory expansion through a microSD card.
